By recognizing early warning signs and risk factors, everyone can help prevent falls and promote safer, more independent living for older adults.

Key signs include:

  • Experincing a recent fall.
  • The use or persription of mobility aides.
  • Using furniture for support or balance.
  • Feeling unsteady when standing or walking.
  • Being worried about falling.
  • Needing to push with their hands to get out of a chair.
  • Having trouble stepping onto a curb or stair.
  • Needing to rush to the toilet.
  • Any small loss of feeling in the feet.
  • Taking medications that cause fatigue or light-headedness.
  • Taking medications to help falling asleep.
  • Taking medications to impove mood.
  • Feelings of saddness or depression.

Older adults can also be encouraged to complete this resource as designed and bring it to their primary care provider to help guide the conversation around falls.
