Interventions for Patients at Low Risk for Falling

Low Risk

Patients at Low Risk for Falling

Patients at Low Risk for falling are patients who:

  • Passed Opportunistic Screening

OR

  • Failed Opportunistic Screening but passed Fall Severity Screening and Mobility Screening.

This provides an excellent opportunity for primary prevention, before a fall occurs. Prevention at this stage is essential. Successful prevention will reduce patients' morbidity and mortality, and reduce the burden on the health care system. In the long term, prevention can reduce wait times for surgeries such as hip and knee replacement, reduce the average length of stay in hospitals, and reduce the financial burden of falls on the health care system.

Patients should be encouraged to follow the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults 65 years and older. Please review this resource.

These patients should also be reassessed each year, just as all patients 65 years and older should be screened for risk of falling.
