Look

  • Flail chest motion, asymmetric chest motion

Listen

  • Breath sounds

Feel

  • Chest wall instability, subcutaneous emphysema

This is the fundamental assessment of breathing in the injured patient and can/should be performed at all training/skill levels.  The goal is to determine if any emergent intervention is required before proceeding to the next step of the primary survey or other studies.

Primary Survey: Things to Find

  • Tension pneumothorax
  • Severe flail chest
  • Massive hemothorax
  • Open pneumothorax
